Maker of the Month

Maker of the Month: Angela Dykman

MOTM28

Oh April. Here you are. Already? It’s not a complaint, discount cialis site really. We do want spring, drugstore we do! It’s just that time is going by so fast. So fast that I felt like we just did our Maker of the Month for March. And now it’s already time for our next monthly Maker? How exciting! This month, the maker is very dear to my heart. She is one of the strongest women I know, she is multi-talented, quick-witted, beautiful inside and out, and an incredible multi-tasker. She’s a mother of four all under the age of six and she has a booming online business. She’s also my sister-in-law, and I love her. I also love the work she does.

Anglea-Profile

Meet Angela Dykman, the owner of VeeVee’s Accessories. She started her business in November of 2011. She is a self-taught crocheter and has developed her own style as the years have gone on. I am always so amazed every time I go to her home. There’s an entire room dedicated to all of her designs, projects on the go, and things waiting to be shipped out. But her house also stays a home, a palace for her kids and a warm and inviting place to come and hang out and have some family time.

In the fall of 2013, Angela became so busy that it ended up being a 3-4 week wait for custom orders. Her work was in high demand! And deservingly so. She was getting so busy, she decided to hire two people to join her team. Both knitters. So now, VeeVee’s offers all of Angela’s crochet work as well as some beautiful knit pieces. So good!

Gorgeous custom orders, handmade and built to last is what you can expect from Angela’s work. She’s into quality more than quantity and she works diligently to get her work to her loyal customers. I’ve been gifted a few things from her through the years, and honestly, everything she’s given me has been my favourite and traveled the world with me!

I asked Angela a few questions on  the why’s and how’s of her business:

1- How and why did you start crocheting?

I started my business in the fall of  2011 as more of a hobby. My daughter was a baldy and had hardly any hair so I made headbands for her to wear, I enjoyed it so much I decided to try and sell them. My business kind of evolved from there when I taught myself to crochet around that same time. Someone had given my daughter this adorable crocheted hat as a gift and when she out grew it I figured “Hey, I could do that!”, so I watched youtube videos and followed tutorials and figured it out pretty quickly. I’ve grown my business on my handmade hats, slippers, photo props and blankets, a lot of the time I make something because I love it and then cross my fingers and hope other people do too!

2- How did you come up with the name ‘VeeVee’s Accessories’?

I came up with the name for my shop (VeeVee’s) from my oldest son, he called his sister ‘baby’ until she was about 9 months old then one day he called her Veevee (for Alivia) and that name stuck.

3- What do you love most about the work you do?

The thing I love most about my work is the variety that can be made with such simple tools and supplies. A ball of yarn and a crochet hook and the possibilities are endless- hats, scarves, slippers, blankets and even toys. I also love that it is something I can do with my young children around, it allows me to be a stay at home mom, and gives our family a little extra income.

4- What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened from owning your business?

A lot of amazing things have happened since I started my business, but probably the most exciting has been my best friend Michelle (who I’ve known for 15 years) and her mom Mariet, who came on board my team to make adorable knit items for the shop. Michelle and I have 9 kids between the two of us and we hang out all the time. It’s so fun to have someone to share the ups and downs of the business with while also navigating through the same motherhood journey!

5- Would you want your kids to learn how to crochet so they can, perhaps, be a part of it one day?

I would love for my kids to learn to crochet, they already love to sit with me and use a hook and tangle up the yarn- they’re very eager to learn. It is a wonderful skill to have and we have to keep this art form alive! I keep trying to talk my husband into learning too but he’s not so eager!

The process of making something from an old art form, by hand. What an amazing skill to have. Like she said, you don’t need much to create something beautiful.

Here are some of the knit blankets you can find in her shop. Lovely!

Adorable baby Zooey (my niece!) in an equally adorable crocheted bear hat. Oh boy. So sweet.

Angela also makes a ton of things for adults. Scarves, slippers, headbands. She does custom orders (if timing allows her to) so keep that in mind folks. She is a super talent, for sure.

MOTM18

With four kids, Angela exceeds the limits people expect of a busy mom. She also home schools her oldest, has everyone enrolled in activities around town, and still manages to keep her business current, and in high demand. And she has a 6 month old! We made a video to show you just what it looks like to have four kiddos, a small business and a lot of pieces of work all around you. It certainly looks like a lot of fun to me. Enjoy!

I loved, loved, loved stepping inside Angela’s world. To see a glimpse of how a small business runs and the amount of work that goes into each and every piece is huge. But there was something special that stood out to me.  There was so much love alongside the skills she has. There was so much fun and light-heartedness alongside the amount of work it all takes. She has a way of balancing everything together. Through her dedication, she is teaching her children that with a lot of work, patience, and practice, you can make something you love grow into a beautiful and successful thing. That is a very amazing quality to instil in your children. I can only hope that when I am blessed with a child one day, I am able to hold the grace and patience she has, and perhaps, balance life and work the way she is able to.
