You guys! We are back at it again. And what better way to kickstart this week than with an incredibly talented and beautiful Maker of the Month?! I give to you all, viagra shop my good friend, cialis Alison Denham of Alison Denham Jewelry. I met Ali originally through our little Pilates world. We both went through the same teacher training program and worked at the same studio afterwards. She’s an absolutely fantastic teacher, as well as a professional contemporary dancer who’s been all over the world doing what she does so beautifully, and within the last year has become a mother to a beautiful girl named Zoya. Isn’t Zoya the sweetest? Basically – Ali is a multi-talented (mega) creative woman. Not only does she dance, perform, teach, and grow adorable babies; she also makes incredibly gorgeous and unique pieces of jewelry. She’s the real deal.

I was lucky enough to have been gifted one of her pieces, just before I headed to China, almost 2 years ago. After she gave me the first necklace, I fell so in love with it and her work that I bought another from her – and they’re still two of my favourite necklaces to wear.

She finds her materials all around the world and puts together the most delicate, intricate and understated pieces. Chain, glass, stone, and tiny trinkets make up the majority of her work. They’re simple enough to be worn daily but not so simple that they go unnoticed. A perfect combo!

I asked Ali a few questions on all things creative:

When did you start creating your jewelry and what sparked your interest?

i started making jewelry in 2010 when i realized i had an obsession with chain. specifically, delicate antique brass chain. i then became interested in mixing chains and this has been a staple in my pieces. i was in toronto on tour with dancing that year and my good friend heather west, who is a stained glass artist, was showing me her work. i had an idea to use tiny pieces of glass for my jewelry. so she cut some for me and that began my use of glass. since then i also collect beach glass and use a tumbler and a drill press to prepare the glass. i’m also making mobiles made of beach glass, mixed chain and driftwood.

What inspires you when making your designs and what is your favourite part about the process?

i love having all my materials out on my desk and fishing through to find combinations that work together. this play time is exciting for me. as satisfying as a finished product is, i enjoy the moments at the very beginning when the pieces are trying to reveal themselves. i often think of a friend or a person who i admire to inspire a new design. if i like a design enough i will create different versions until i’ve exhausted the fascination. i prefer to create longer necklaces without clasps so they can just slip over the head. i set out to make jewelry that is delicate but sturdy, eye catching in a subtle way and comfortable.

Where do you find/source all of your material and do you enjoy that part of it?

as a contemporary dancer i have travelled alot and some of my favorite places where i have found materials are odessa, paris, berlin, new york and toronto. visiting markets and antique shops is where i have scored unique pieces to incorporate into my jewelry. paris has probably had the most influence on my jewelry making. there’s so many inspiring artists there doing delicate chain work. also it’s just such a sexy stylish city and i love it there!

It’s so much fun to watch someone create their ‘thing’. Just watching the way they do what they do, and the technique or style that goes into it is so fascinating. Ali has such a relaxed approach when she’s making something. It’s lovely to be around during the process.

It was truly a pleasure to be able to step inside Ali’s (and Zoya’s) world. Joyelle and I seriously adored little Zoya and fell in love with all of Ali’s work. I’ve said it before, but I can’t tell you all how much joy I get from seeing other creative people in their element. It’s so nice to be able to support and be around that kind of creative energy. It feeds me something good!

Ali – thank you so so much for giving us the honour of seeing just what you do in a beautifully intimate setting.
