This is Tania Orozco. She is an imaginative illustrator, cialis sale online graphic designer, and jewelry maker. And we are so happy to introduce her as our Maker of the Month! She recently invited Cori and me into her home to share some bits and pieces of her enchanting life. We were honoured to visit her charm-filled apartment right in the heart of Vancouver’s bustling Chinatown. As we sipped on ice coffees and giggled over general silliness, Tania showed us her beautiful work.

Her whimsical illustrations are uber-feminine with a touch of the bizarre – model-esque figures are adorned with horns, extreme hair-dos and intricately bejeweled. Not only is Tania blessed with mad drawing skills, but she also makes beautifully delicate ceramic and beaded jewelry. Her creativity does not stop there, you can also find her quirky patterns printed on t-shirts, hats and dresses on PAOM. I seriously want her Pretty Eyes Tote Bag!

I love all the fine detail on her jewelry. So delicate. Unfortunately for us, she isn’t making as much jewelry now-a-days. But guess what? Now, don’t be jealous, but I have one of her amazing necklaces and it’s my favourite. I bought it from her a couple years ago when she had a booth at the Chinatown Night Market. She also custom made a tough-guy molar necklace for my husband and it’s basically the raddest thing he owns.

Also, I’d like to mention how on-point Tania’s colour palette is! Check out the exciting pops of candied colour. It’s so sweet you could taste it!

I asked Tania a little about herself and why she creates. Here’s what she had to say:

Were you always artistic?
I think so, for as long as I can remember I’ve always liked to make crafts, and to draw. I used to make little clothes for my dolls (and give them pretty badly executed punk haircuts), paint my shoes, make bags, necklaces, and sew little creatures with pieces of fabric that I’d find around my house.

What was your favourite thing to draw as a child?
My absolute favourite thing to draw as a child was manga, especially Saint Seiya, Magic Knight Rayearth, Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon and Candy Candy, I was very into manga series and videogames.

Where did you grow up and how does it influence you work?
I grew up in a small city in Mexico called Morelia, Michoacán. There are a ton of artisans that work with different mediums such as wood, fabric, ceramics, beads, etc. – so I was always surrounded by colourful art, even by candies! I love that everything is happy and full of colour, so I really like to mix different elements from Mexican culture in my paintings.

What’s the inspirations behind your illustrations?
That’s a hard question!… It can be a lot of stuff really. I like to think that everything can inspire you to make something. I usually find inspiration in a song, a poem, a painting, a memory, a place or a person.

I also like to surf the internet, especially artsy blogs, so I usually get inspired by other people’s work, fashion photography, textures in paintings that are mesmerizing and I’m always a fan of a pretty colour palette, Yummy.  <3

What are you currently working on?
I’m currently working with my best friend building a YouTube channel that we want to launch by the end of this month (Hello Dudettes). Besides that, I’m working on my bad english skills and also on a Licensing contest from Lila Rogers’ studio.

I also want to make pins and nails decals, hopefully soon. Also, right now I’m working on adding new stuff to my Society6 shop and a I also have a PAOM store.

Who are some of your favourite artists and/or people you’d love to collaborate with?
If they were alive I would love to work with Jean Giraud (Moebius) and Frida Kahlo AAAAAH their work is AWESOME! My head is exploding! I also like Hieronymus Bosch, Interesni Kazki, Hsiao-Ron Cheng, Curiot and lots of Japanese Illustrators.

Aaand..where has been some of your favourite places to travel?
I love the water so I really like going to the beach and small towns in Mexico and also Joffre Lakes!

After chatting with Tania in her home, I naturally got hungry…as I do. So Tania showed us around her ‘hood and we went on a hunt for a treat.

On the way, we went a little photo-happy. There’s just so much colour and texture downtown Vancouver!  Also, Tania is just so adorable. You can’t help but love her constant smile and soft-spoken calming spirit.

After a bit of a walk-about, it was decided that I was the only peckish one in the bunch. (As usual.) So, I hit up the nearest bakery I could find. Thankfully Tania lives a stones-throw from a Chinatown landmark, New Town Bakery. It is always bumping and never disappointing. I stuffed my face with fresh coconut-pineapple buns. Nom nom. It was such a great day (and not just because of the baked goods). It is always a treat to get inspired by creative individuals, and Tania is one of the best!

Here’s a little movie I put together of our visit with Tania. Thanks to Cori Anne for taking all the beautiful photos! And make sure you check out Tania’s website to view more of her stunning work. Also, you MUST check out her new project that she shares with her best friend Julia – Hello Dudettes. These girls are going to be queens of YouTube soon – their videos are amazing and so funny. Check it out!

If you enjoyed this post, make sure to check out our past Maker of the Month artist series – Karlene Harvey was last months feature.

Peace and Love,
